Biography

Juana was born in the early 1600s to Juan de la Cruz and Beatriz de los Ángeles.^[1] In 1625 she was living with Hernando Márquez^[1]. She was later accused of "hexing him after he spurned her"^[1] and her mother was accused by his brother of killing Hernando with witchcraft.^[1]

By 1626, she was married to Juan Griego ^[2] and they had five known children: Nicolás Griego, Blas, María de la Cruz Alemán, Maria Graciana, and Juana.

Research Notes

1. It is possible that María had a daughter with Hernando Márquez before she married Juan Griego. However, there is no evidence to support this yet.
